Director Wang Quan’an (王全安) is going to be make a film after the novel White Deer Plain (白鹿原) by Shaanxi writer Chen Zhongshi (陈忠实).

Wang Quan’an is the director of Apart, Together (团圆), which won the 2010 Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. In today’s tabloid City Sun, published from Rizhao in Shandong, an article centers on the speculation that director Wang has his eye on Tang Wei (汤唯) for the female lead of White Deer Plain (白鹿原). Scenes of an explicit sexual nature had meant that the movie rights for the novel were off-limits for some years.

The novel is about three generations of peasants in Bailu Village, Shaanxi, and subsequently outlines the development in rural peasants’ lives.

The article today happily promises: “Director Wang Quan’an says that he has already invited Tang Wei to join the film. But Tang Wei does not want to act in the passion scenes of this film. She’ll probably use a double.”

Tang Wei was the star of Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, and she was censored from Chinese TV and films after her appearance. Re-emerging in Crossing Hennessy, there were wild rumors on the internet including that she was selling ‘street art’ in Britain to survive during her ban period. However, these were proven to be untrue.
