Formerly blacklisted actress Tang Wei to play Mao Zedong’s first girlfriend in Party film

Actress Tang Wei (汤唯), who was blacklisted from appearing in Chinese films or on TV for a time, has been rehabilitated: she is to play Mao Zedong’s first love in a new film called The Founding of the Party, a prequel to the state-produced smash hit that was produced in 2009 to celebrate 60 years of the People’s Republic of China and Communist Party rule.

Aftershock, filmed like The Banquet or The Day After Tomorrow? Decide!

Today is the opening of Feng Xiaogang’s Aftershock (唐山大地震), a tear-jerker of a movie, with the promoters are hinting that there won’t be a dry eye in the audience.

Based on the big earthquake of Tangshan in 1976, Feng’s wife Xu Fan plays a mother who has to choose which of her offsprings will live. The film is also the first i-max movie made out of the United States, and predicted to be a top box office smash.
