Further evidence that today’s youth are going to hell in a handbasket: the Chongqing Evening News reports that three college students who had been hired by Wanzhou Port couldn’t write clearly enough to fill out their contracts themselves; HR had to do it for them. Said the HR rep, apart from a legible “male” in the sex blank, “their characters looked drunk, falling over on themselves.”
The students blamed four years of typing on a computer rather than writing by hand for compounding their poor handwriting. Their university administration has announced plans to require all students to take penmanship and calligraphy courses before graduation.
Interestingly, the three students weren’t fired, since there’s a shortage of nautical engineers in today’s marketplace, with supply running about 20% of demand. Many companies have worsened the labor market for themselves by not hiring women. CWB quotes one company that says “Working in transportation is harder than other jobs, and men are better able to endure hardships than women.”
