China triumphant in War on Porn

Xinhua, the Chinese Government’s official press agency, reports that “China has successfully shut down more than 1,800 pornographic Web sites in one year in a nationwide campaign.”

China launched the current campaign in June last year. Liu Zhenrong, director of the program’s online reporting centre, said In the last year, the centre received 143,000 reports on Web sites with pornographic or other illegal contents.

About 67.5 per cent of the reports were related to web sites with pornographic contents, while 4.4 per cent of them involved cults and 3.4 per cent were related to online graft, Liu said.

The public security and judicial departments acted on 1,878 of these reports, of which 1,264 were suspicious of pornographic content, and 307 of providing information about gambling.

Loyal citizens who snitch on adult content providers receive rewards as high as 2,000 RMB ( 240 USD). Other surfers may choose to reward themselves by visiting Xinhua’s latest gallery – Naked cyclists demonstrate in Spain.
