Two trucks in a freight yard

The front page of today’s New Life Post features striking cover photo of two trucks sitting parked on a vast empty lot as police snap photos and take notes of the scene.

The photo unfortunately corresponds to a tragic story: a truck driver was struck and killed in the China United International Rail Containers freight yard in Chengxian County, near Kunming, Yunnan Province.

A truck’s rear door was stuck open, so the driver asked the driver of a second truck to attempt to force it closed by backing up into it, and it was during that maneuver that he was killed. Staff at the freight yard said that trucks are not permitted to back up on the grounds, nor are drivers allowed to exit their vehicles.

Many newspapers featured stories about housing prices at the top of the front page. The New Life Post‘s top headline announces that the provincial government has asked for a study of possible caps on home purchases; it also seeks an inquiry into ineffective price stabilization.

Rounding out the front page is a headline announcing the increase in reserve requirements for the country’s six major commercial banks, and a photo of Hwang Jang-yop, the highest-ranking North Korean defector, who was found dead in his South Korean apartment on Sunday.
