New Culture View, March 30, 2010
Like many of today’s newspapers, the New Culture View featured yesterday’s subway bombing on the front page. The two bombings that hit the Moscow Metro killed 39 people and injured more than 70 (the paper gives earlier figures of 38 dead and 63 injured).
The paper’s matter-of-fact headline about the international incident is paired with a report about a local disaster, a massive fire that engulfed the Tianyuan shopping mall in Changchun Sunday night. It was largely extinguished at 6 pm yesterday, but the flames were not totally put out until 1:25 this morning after burning for more than 31 hours.
The fire wiped out 270 shops and completely destroyed the 14,000 square meter building, which will be torn down.
