The portrait of Mao Zedong that hangs in the center of Tiananmen Gate was replaced yesterday. Both The Beijing News and the Beijing Morning Post found this periodic exercise worthy of the front page. TBN‘s caption:

Last night at around 10 o’clock, workers using a crane replaced the portrait of Chairman Mao on the front of Tiananmen Gate. After it was installed, a worker rode the crane and gave the new portrait a thorough wipe-down.

The evening celebration will feature more than a half hour’s worth of pyrotechnics at 99 locations around the city. Cai Guoqiang, whose team designed the giant footprints for last year’s Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, has promised great things for Thursday’s show. The Beijing Morning Post cover trumpets the fact that this year’s display will be twice as large as the opening ceremony show.

And The Beijing News says that 42,523 shells will be used in the display. Anyone interested in checking up on the accuracy of this bit of journalism?
