According to today’s Beijing News, the capital’s police will hire about ten thousands of volunteers to prohibit drugs from now until June 26 2007, the ‘International Day Against Drugs’.

Only people over the age of 18 can sign up. Foreigners and former drug users are welcome, but not people who have a drug-related criminal record.

Their main job is to investigate drug dealing in entertainment areas, and tip off the police.

There is no salary for being a drug snitch, however if an informant gives the police a tip off that results in an arrest, they may get a reward of 10,000 yuan (USD1,280).

The image on the front page above is unrelated to the drug snitch headline, and shows the results of a car crash in Beijing.
