The top headline trumpets yesterday’s major snowfall, but the cover photograph of today’s Beijing News features a protester at the Japanese embassy. Fifty-some protesters in Beijing wearing T-shirts reading “Protect the Diaoyu Islands” held a calm protest at 11:00 yesterday morning. The accompanying article inside the paper has a second picture, showing a two-year-old girl holding a flag in the snow (as well as a view of the back of the T-shirt, which reads “Japan Off Diaoyu Islands” in less-than-polite language).
The China Daily also has the story, but it leaves out such pertinent details as the presence of several dozen police to keep order, as well as the relatively large-scale nature of the protest: occuring simultaneously in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Changsha, and Hong Kong, with an affiliated protest in New York, this is apparently the largest protest organized by the Federation to Protect the Diaoyu Islands.
Curiously, the China Daily‘s article is accompanied by a photo of the protest in Hong Kong despite no mention of it in the text.
