Public safety

It seems Beijing has learned a lesson from the accident in Miyun Country last Spring Festival when a bridge collapsed killing local revellers:, the city is is implementing strict safety measures this year in places where large numbers of people gather. These measures were the hottest news for tabloid papers like Beijing Times and Beijing Daily Messenger. They include:

Police to guide groups of people to see flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen square

From now on, if you want to view the flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen, you have to get there an hour early and wait at one of seven different entrances around the square. Then the police will escort you and your group to a place where you can view the flag-raising. This measure may be aimed at preventing other types of ‘accidents’ too.

Emergency treatment test / rehearsal

Yesterday, students from a training program held by Beijing Emergency Treatment Center took part in their final exam by rehearsing responses to different emergencies.
