For the past five days, the headlines of most big newspapers in Beijing have been along the lines of “Beijing is going to ……. ” and “Proposal to cancel / implement …. policy”
Now it is time to say goodbye to such headlines, because one of the “two conferences”, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPC), adjourned yesterday.
But we will see similar headlines in March again, when the nationwide People’s Congress opens.
Most plans and policies still in discussion are reported as leading headlines by rushy journalists. In my opinion, these reports may mislead audience and let them feel something are really happening when in fact they are still in the discussion stage.
The pictured front page from Beijing Times features a photo that some CPPC delegates took as a souvenir after the closing ceremony. The big black headline is Beijing will set up a main station to aid handicapped people Will it really happen?
