Front Page of the Day is a daily review of the news on the front page of one Chinese newspaper, selected from a newsstand in Beijing’s central business district.
The Beijing News reports that China’s national football team were knocked out early from the Asian Cup 2007 after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Uzbekistan yesterday, in Kuala Lumpur. The final match will take place on July 29th in Jakarta.
The photo shows unhappy Chinese players leaving the field.
The front page also has news of the cardboard baozi (steamed bun) affair, which received extensive attention a couple days ago (see Monday’s front page). The Beijing TV report showing baozi being made with cardboard instead of pork that was relayed to news programs around the world has been declared fake news, and the police have arrested the journalist who filed the report. Beijing Television reported this last night, apologized for running the story, and said that the journalist was just a freelancer.
According to the report, the footage was stage managed by the journalist, a certain Mr. Zi. He hired some workers in a small restaurant to make baozi with minced cardboard, and then recorded this with his digital camera.
