‘Zongzi’ are little leaf-wrapped packets of rice and dates eaten to celebrate Dragon Boat festival or ‘duanwu jie’ which commemorates the death of poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself towards the end of the Warring States period (475 – 221 BC) when he heard that the Qing state had conquered the Chu. Black market zongzi means zongzi that have been made without proper food permits in unsanitary conditions.
