Geremie Barmé has published an article called on Japanfocus.org called “Mirrors of History, On a Sino-Japanese Moment and Some Antecedents” that looks at “the fascinating yet unsettling face of China’s contemporary cheery authoritarianism”.
Barmé analyses the recent anti-Japanese demonstrations in a historical context, presenting a more sophisticated (dare I say nuanced) view of recent events than the bog-standard “the people are rioting and now the Commies are scared that they have let the genie out of the bottle” approach taken by commentators in most Western media.
