What do you do with a 3D newspaper? Stuff it full of ads!

Following the smash success of the 3D version of Avatar, Hollywood studios are scrambling to run ordinary 2D films through a 3D conversion process, and the lackluster results to date threaten to scuttle the technology before it even has a chance to get off the ground.

But that happens, there’s still time to jump on the bandwagon, as today’s Shiyan Evening News did with its sixteen-page Friday edition.

Yesterday’s announcement made comparisons to Avatar and the MMORPG “A Perfect World,” and promised that the issue would be “China’s First 3D Newspaper.” Each copy came with a free pair of red/blue 3D glasses so readers could gasp in awe at the future of print publishing.

Except it’s really just an ad circular. Instead of offering an innovative stereoscopic take on the day’s news, the paper simply ran sixteen pages of ads. Advertisers include a wedding photo studio, a dinosaur theme park, local theaters screening the 3D version of Clash of the Titans, several hospitals, a number of car makes, and the eyewear retailer that sponsored the free 3D glasses.
