Today’s Southern Metropolis Daily announces that China will shift its monetary policy “from prudent to tight” next year, in an effort to prevent the economy from overheating and to contain inflation. The policy changes are a result of the three-day 2007 Central Economic Work Conference, which concluded yesterday.

The front page photo shows mainland tourists in conflict with local Macao police. The tour group, which came from Hebei Province, reportedly resented extra charges levied by the local guide, and became dissatisfied with the police response. The situation escalated and riot police were called.

The headline below the photo says that police in Panyu, Guangdong Province, shot and killed a drug dealer yesterday. The last sentence of this article reads: “The reporter found a casing from the police pistol at the scene. After 10 years, the 1997-made bullet was finally ejected from the gun.”
