The headline of today’s Beijing Daily Messenger announces that the CPI (Consumer Price Index) for 2007 was the highest for the last 11 years. According to an annual report published by the National Statistics Bureau yesterday, China’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) grew 11.4 percent last year from 2006, to 24.66 trillion yuan ($3.42 trillion), while the CPI rose 4.8 percent, 3.3 percent higher than 2006.
Hong Kong popular director and actor Steven Chow’s long-awaited movie CJ7 (长江七号 Chang Jiang Qi Hao) finally premiered in Beijing theaters yesterday. The front page photo shows Chow and Zhang Yuqi, the films leading lady at the premier.

- The first meeting of the 11th Beijing People’s Political Consultative Conference closed yesterday.
- Today is the first day of increased passenger levels on the Beijing Subway, caused by ‘chun yun’, the large numbers of people moving around China before Spring Festival. The report predicted that today’s total passenger volume on the subway will be about 2.9 million.
