The top headline in today’s Beijing news is about a new draft law that would lower fines for food safety infringements if the manufacturer of the problem food product publicly recalls the product.
The second headline is about property prices: The average price of real estate inside Beijing’s fourth ring road is 13,696 yuan (1,181 USD) per square meter, according figures for the first half of 2007 from the Statistics Bureau of Beijing.
The photo shows suspects in a theft case in Handan, Hebei Province at the first day of their trial in the Handan intermediate court.
This case was very much in the public eye a few months ago. The two suspects were employees of the Agricultural Bank. They are alleged to have stolen more than 45 million yuan (5,950,000 USD) from the bank in one month, by walking out with cash every day. They apparently used this money to buy lottery tickets but only won 98,000 yuan (12,957 USD) back.
