Shanghai Youth Daily
September 5, 2007

Youth Daily, more commonly known in English as Shanghai Youth Daily, is a metropolitan newspaper targeted at young to middle-aged readers, and is published under the auspices of the Shanghai Youth League.

There’s little hard news on the front page today. The top headline announces that a consumer guide to children’s snacks will be issued this month by Ministry of Health. The guide will divide snacks into three categories according to recommended consumption rates: restricted, occasional, and frequent. According to the guide, fried foods, potato chips, and sugary sodas are classified as restricted and should not be consumed more than once a week.

The second headline says that an automatic alarm system in Shanghai’s subway can detect passengers carrying explosives anywhere instide subway stations.

The picture on the front page show an exhibit at the Shanghai International Art Festival, to open tomorrow. The newspaper declines to mention the name of the artist whose work is featured in the photo – please inform us in the comments if you know. Update: We’ve been informed that the artist is Zhou Chunya (周春芽), well-known for his green dogs.

Other headlines: people are organizing trips to Hong Kong to buy stocks, and Olympic ticket buyers are encouraged to check their junk mail folders regularly, just in case the confirmation email was misidentified as spam.
