The lead headline of today’s Beijing Youth Daily is about Chinese leaders, including President Hu Jintao and former President Jiang Zemin, who have taken the lead in donating to stricken areas to help the people there keep warm for the winter.

The front page picture shows a sound-proof cover being completed over Zhanxi Road. Connecting the Second Ring to the Third Ring on the north-west side of the city, the road cuts through the Beijing Zoo from north to south. So to avoid disturbing the animals, it has been built as an elevated, soundproof.

Other headlines:

• Yesterday was the tenth “Queuing Day” in Beijing. On the 11th of every month (so chosen because the two digits look like people standing in line), people are called upon to line up while waiting in public. According to the article, over 80% of people waiting at bus stops inside the Fifth Ring stood in queues.

• After renovations, the Wangfujing Shopping Mall opened yesterday. Retail area has doubled, and the mall focuses more on younger consumers.

• Chinese young people celebrated Single’s Day yesterday (11/11 – so chosen because one is the loneliest number). Activities included subway line matchmaking, group shopping, and games for couples.
