A dismantling project is underway to take apart the Olympic Torch that held the 2008 Olympic Flame standing on top of Beijing’s Bird Nest National Stadium.

According to today’s Beijing Times, after the removal, the structure will undergo a series of renovations, and eventually turn into a piece of installment, which will be centerpiece of a new Olympic Torch Square north of the National Stadium.

Environmentalists should be pleased to learn that no more fuel will be burned because the torch function will be disabled.

The top headline of the paper announces that “the Chinese Foreign Ministry insists that Japan must apologize”, referring to the recent trawler incident.
