Yunnan Info Daily, a joint venture between the Yunan Publication Group and the Southern Media Group, covers all of Yunnan province, but its focus is on Kunming, the capital city.
Today’s top headline is about a a project to redo 121 Avenue, a main road in Kunming named after the December First Incident. The government had plans to make it a one-way street, corresponding to another road going in the opposite direction in an effort to prevent frequent traffic jams. The project is supposed to be finished at the end of the year. According to an engineer, “The results won’t be any worse than things are now.”
The front page picture shows a traffic cop directing cars on the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Thousands of police remained on duty till midnight to ensure traffic safety.
Another headline notes that because of poor weather, the moon did not make an appearance at Kunming’s Mid-Autumn Festival. Here in Beijing, however, families could spend the night together eating mooncakes and enjoying the moonlight.
Other headlines:
• Construction will begin this year on 11,000 affordable homes in Kunming;
• Xu Qiliang took up his new position as PLA Air Force Commander on September 24.
A curiosity: If you look at the full size image of the front page (taken from a PDF file on the paper’s website), you will find a tiny line of text at the bottom that reads: “This PDF file was created by a trial version of pdfFactory.” Even if Yunnan Info Daily hasn’t paid for the software, it’s comforting to know that they didn’t resort to using a pirated version.
