Legless mountaineer and other stories from China’s front pages

Shanxi Evening News 14 Aug 2012

A few heart-warming stories from the front pages of China’s newspapers today, and a more disturbing one as a notorious criminal is killed.

From Shanxi Evening News (山西晚报) comes the inspirational story of Chen Zhou (陈州), a man from Shandong with no legs who used his own two arms and two self-made boxes 0f 3 kg to climb to the top of Huashan (华山) in ten hours.  Reaching the northern peak of Huashan, he completed a personal quest to climb to the top of all five of China’s sacred mountains.

The front page of the City Express (城市快报) in Tianjin today features an image of a mother and son reunion 25 years after the son was kidnapped. “I recognized him immediately”, the mother said upon seeing her son again after such a long time.

And in other news, the notorious criminal Zhou Kehua (周克华), responsible for a string of robberies and murders since 2004, was shot dead by police this morning in Chongqing. For the story and some graphic images of the scene, see this Xinhua report (in Chinese). For a running commentary in Chinese on the whole affair, see here, and for a image slideshow of Zhou Kehua’s crimes, see here.

In related news, another killer on the loose was in the news earlier in the year. In January media reported on a massive manhunt for former cop Zeng Kaigui — with 13,000 officers, two helicopters, road blocks and a large publicity campaign keeping citizens aware of the danger. Zeng Kaigui has been on the radar since as far back as 1995, and performing robbery-murders since 2004. After the flurry of publicity in January, there has been no further news of Zeng Kaigui.
