Beijing News
August 31, 2007

The top headline of The Beijing News today announces that the government has replaced five key ministers, including the ministers of finance and personnel (details in the China Daily).

Interestingly, almost every metropolitan daily features this story as a top headline, but none of the Party’s Chinese-language mouthpieces mention it up front. Headlines in the People’s Daily, Guangming Daily, and other national papers herald the closing of the 20th conference of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, and relegate the personnel changes to the body of the article.

The front page photo shows a divorce trial held in the home of the soon-to-be ex-husband. Because he had been bedridden for a long time, the local judge decided to hold the trial in his home in Fangshan District in the outskirts of Beijing.

At the bottom of the page, two headlines mention that a Chinese navy fleet will visit Japan at the end of the year, and the highway between Beijing and Chengde will connect to the Third Ring Road in October.
