Beijing opens five new metro lines in one day

Five new subway and light track lines debuted yesterday, sending people living in Beijing a new year surprise.

The five new lines have added an combined 108 kilometers to the city’s existing nine lines, bringing the total length from 228 kilometers to 336 kilometers. According to the city’s planning, by 2015, the total length is going to exceed seven hundred kilometers, with 10 more lines currently under construction.

Today’s top headline concerns Beijing housing project which was meant to provide low-income families with affordable housing. According to the newspaper, project tenants’ financial condition will be constantly assessed and those who no longer qualify will face the choice of either pay high rent or leave.
