Beijing becoming a “global hub of high-tech innovation”

Today, a headline highlighted by a bold red box on the front page of the Beijing Daily reads, “Our city is gradually becoming a global hub of technology innovation.”

The article says that in the past five years, Beijing has successfully met its innovation targets summarized by the slogan, “six doubles.” A key statistic highlighted is that there are now 661.6 billion tech industry contracts in the city.

The front page goes into detail about the various increases in revenue the city has seen in six specific areas it had selected for improvement. These include Beijing’s ‘high-tech industry’, ‘science and technology services’ and ‘information services’, which together now bring in 362.57 billion yuan annually (1.92 times the 2006 figure); The Zhongguancun National Innovation Demonstration Zone, which has increased its revenue by 2.8 times compared to 2006; and various measurements of the number of patents registered and contracts signed.

Party papers like the Beijing Daily often use a red box or red type to highlight stories considered important.
