Disappearing Shanghai

Shu Haolun is a documentary fimmaker from Shanghai. His family has an old house in Da Zhongli, one of Shanghai’s oldest neighborhoods. The family has lived there for three generations.

When he heard the news that the neighborhood faced “urban reconstruction”, he decided to go back there with his video camera.

He made a film called Nostalgia that contrasts his memories of growing up in the old neighborhood with the gleaming new face of Shanghai represented by the skyscrapers that are increasingly taking the place of old neigborhoods.
