CineWiki (中文电影维基), an ambitious project that aims to be a Chinese-language encyclopedia of film, formally launched on 28 December, 2006.
According to the project’s about page, a group of 20 film enthusiasts from various countries and regions have been developing the site since October. There’s not much on the site at present – only 717 articles (or stubs) – but judging from the organizational framework, the project has grand designs. According to its mission statement, the site intends to be useful, participatory, accumulative, structured, and non-commercial, as well as distinct from movie databases such as the IMDB and film forums hosted by major Chinese web portals.
CineWiki is independent from Wikipedia, and unlike many wikis, it does not allow editing by unregistered users. From the membership readme:
The staff of this website is composed of film enthusiast volunteers. Because of technical limitations and personnel management concerns, at present we are unable to implement the free, open registration that other wiki websites have. However, this website is sincere in its openness to all like-minded experts, scholars, critics, and especially fans. The work of everyone is respected, but we cannot single out any individual. We long for your enthusiasm, but we acknowledge the inherent value of one form of action, that form being the expression of our love of movies through the accumulation of knowledge. CineWiki can only be the embodiment of the collective value of all film fans coming together because of movies, an Internet platform that provides for us writing, translation, and aggregation of cinematic knowledge, that enables us and others to read and reference a wider range of correct, rigorous information about film. If you cannot agree with these values, if you cannot commit to this kind of action, then perhaps you will be unable to work together with CineWiki.
