The former Portuguese colony of Macau has long been famous for its casinos, but until 2002, all gambling in the enclave was all controlled by billionaire Stanley Ho’s Sociedade de Jogos de Macau. With the end of Ho’s monopolistic contract with the Macanese government, investment is pouring into Macau from Las Vegas and elsewhere.
The city, often described as sleepy, is now going through a construction boom as hotels and gaming companies prepare to offer decadent fun to Mainland tourists, many of whom love gambling.
This short episode of the Hard Hat Show takes a look at some of the new construction in Macau. Thanks to Anthony Lawrance, the man behind Destination Pearl River Delta, for inspiration.
