Ultra-leftists and righteous indignation

The Beijing Daily Messenger has got hot under the collar about a real estate ad featuring a Chairman Mao lookalike.

A legal rentaquote is recruited to the cause, and he notes that it is illegal to use the images of Chinese government or Party leaders in advertisements.

The advertisers themselves seem to be attempting to get round the problem by claiming that they are using the image of a man who happens to look like Mao, rather than Mao himself.

A similar case involving a ceramic model of the ruthless old Chairman standing outside a Hunanese restaurant in Guangzhou did not end well, with the owners forced to take it down and pay a heavy fine.
