Astronomical outdoor advertising

Investment and finance website The Street reports on a speech by Viacom media mogul Sumner Redstone:

Appearing at a Bear Stearns conference in Palm Beach, Fla., Redstone spoke bullishly about Viacom’s prospects in China, saying that the company hoped to have 24-hour MTV channels in both Beijing and Shanghai, and adding that the prospects for Viacom’s outdoor advertising business in China were “astronomical.”

The Street’s report is here. You can find Sumner Redstone at number 35 on Forbes’ list of the world’s richest people here.

Speaking of astonomical advertising, Mengniu Milk (whose Taikonaut ad campaign is on danwei here) is try to woo the people of Hong Kong with appeals to nationalism. The International Herald Tribune reports:

A full-scale advertising blitz is in progress in the Hong Kong subway. Plastered all over the interior of the trains are pictures of a boy and a woman in space suits, both beaming widely as they flex their biceps. The product they are selling is milk produced by a mainland Chinese company called Mengniu.

There is a faint whiff of cheesiness to the whole production. Mainland companies have yet to master the art of advertising, and in a city where Ralph Lauren, Bang Olufsen and Apple compete for consumers’ attention, they are bound to lag in the cool-looking ad stakes.

A faint whiff eh? The IHT article is here. Thanks for the link Bonny.
