Arnold Shwarzenegger visited China a few years ago to support an event connected with the Special Olympics. He took the opportunity to pick up some extra cash by endorsing products made by Bubugao, a prominent local electronics manufacturer. The advertisement pictured below used to adorn several prominent billboards at Beijing’s Capital Airport.
The three characters at the top are ‘bu bu gao’. At the bottom is Arnie’s name in Chinese: ‘ah nuo – shi wa xing ge’.
Despite a name which sound ridiculous in English, Bubugao produce superb DVD players. The soon-to-be governor of California may be pleased to know that Bubugao’s standard model is not only cheap — about $100, it also includes an ‘error-correction’ function that enhances the quality of low quality (i.e. pirate) disks. Chinese DVD players are also usually liberated from zone encoding, meaning that you can watch any kind of DVD on them, no matter which market it was released in.
