A fighter jet and the Beijing mayor’s job description

Beijing Times, 2007.07.17

An exhibition to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) opened in Beijing yesterday. Declassified materials, such as research papers on atomic weapons and satellites, were put on display.

Some advanced military weaponry was on display too, including new types of surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and the brand new fighter jet pictured on the front page – 飞豹 (“flying leopard”). Beijing Daily Messenger also featured the fighter on today’s front page; other papers had photos of the aftermath of the earthquake in Japan.

The lead headline announces exciting new work assignments for Beijing’s mayor and eight vice mayors. Mayor Wang Qishan will guide the overall work of city government. Executive vice-mayor Ji Lin will be in charge of development, finance, and personnel.
