The front page picture in today’s Beijing Youth Daily shows French President Nicolas Sarkozy greeting a student during his speech at Tsinghua University yesterday. The Beijing News ran a slightly more intimate photo on its cover.
The paper’s top headline announces that next year’s top economic goal will be to prevent a fast growth rate from overheating and price rises becoming entrenched inflation. The nation will continue to strengthen macroeconomic regulation next year, a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee said yesterday.
Other headlines:
• Annual tickets to Beijing’s parks will be integrated with the city’s public transportation cards next year, said the Park Management Center;
• Bi Fujian, a popular CCTV program host, denied allegations that he received 200,000 yuan in return for hosting an extravagant wedding;
• Following negotiations between the National Reform and Development Committee and CNPC and SinoPec, fuel supplies will return to normal in Beijing.
One of the most popular headlines of the day did not appear on the front page of the Beijing Youth Daily. A lucky lotto player in Gansu Province won 102 million yuan, the highest amount awarded to a single individual at one time since China began the lottery in 1987. The record prize resulted from the winner having picked the same number twenty times. After taxes, the winnings are estimated to be around 82 million yuan (US$11 million).
