There are some oddly-named toothpaste brands sold in China. Above is ‘Whitee’ a Korean brand that appears to be produced by a company called Median.
And then there is Darlie toothpaste, which used to be called Darkie and is still known as Black Person Toothpaste (hei ren yagao) in Chinese.
Darlie is sold in several East Asian markets. According to Dr. Val Kolpakov, a toothpaste-collecting dentist from Saginaw, Michigan:
Hazel & Hawley Chemical Co. would probably still be hawking Darkie toothpaste had the company not been acquired by Colgate. The Darkie brand’s Al Jolson-inspired logo, a grinning caricature in blackface and a top hat, was as offensive as its name. Colgate bought the company in 1985, and then ditched the logo and changed the product’s [English] name to Darlie after US civil rights groups protested.
