Xinjiang Metropolis Daily is published out of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region by the Xinjiang Daily Newspaper Group.
Today’s paper runs with a weather report as the top story: “Temperatures to plummet; 9ºC on Mid-Autumn Day.” Rain was predicted today for the region’s capital, Urumchi, with temperatures between 7 and 14.
The front page photo shows a “healthy running” group of about 20,000 people who ran 7.6km yesterday. The event was sponsored by Amway.
Other headlines:
• Japan’s ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party, chose Yasuo Fukuda as its new leader yesterday. According to the Telegraph’s latest report, Mr. Fukuda was named as Japan’s new Prime Minister today;
• The Chinese Women’s football team was beaten by Norway 0:1, putting an end to their participation in the Women’s World Cup 2007;
• Xinjiang University cut food prices at all dining halls on campus. 30,000 students benefit.
