Kaiser Kuo reports on a conversation with Dr. Gerd Leipold, International Executive Director of Greenpeace, who is in Beijing to open the controversial environmental group’s first China chapter:
“Leipold surprised me on many counts. First, he flat-out told me that while the organization might well be in the anti-globalization camp, neither he himself nor Martin [Prieto, the director of the Argentine chapter of Greenpeace] felt that way. He said that joining up with the anti-globalization camp puts him in bed with isolationist neo-conservatives and primitivists who would have us go back to tribal society, and that having come from a small town himself, he thinks there’s nothing more violent, oppressive and dehumanizing than tribal life.”
