The Legal Mirror turns its attention today to an official Inquiry into the misuse Canadian government funds to promote federalism in Quebec. What’s the draw here? No, it’s not sympathy with another country’s anti-secessionist effort.
It’s Dashan (aka Mark Rowswell) – or rather, Dashan & Friends in Canada, a series that ran on Chinese TV in the late 90s. Ad company Vickers & Benson took $10 million CDN from the Canadian government, earmarked for sponsoring pro-federalist programs, to produce the show. John Gomery, Commissioner of the Inquiry, observed, “There are not too many sovereigntists in China.”
The story in The Legal Mirror is basically taken from a report in the New Star Weekly, a Canadian Chinese-language paper. However, the reporter did call Dashan’s representative, and then the Chinese embassy in Toronto. The embassy couldn’t help, because Mr. Rowswell isn’t a Chinese citizen.
