Wang Lijun\u2019s face is displayed large on (some of) China\u2019s front pages today with the news that the former vice-mayor and police chief of Chongqing has been charged with four crimes: \u00a0using the law for personal gain (\u5f87\u79c1\u6789\u6cd5), defection (\u53db\u9003), abuse of power (\u6ee5\u7528\u804c\u6743) and bribery (\u53d7\u8d3f).\u00a0<\/span>As the\u00a0Daily Sunshine<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(\u6676\u62a5) from Shenzhen\u00a0reports<\/a>, the charges have been laid by the public prosecutor in Sichuan, Chengdu province, according to legal proceedings instituted by a court in the city.<\/p>\n

Yet interestingly, the new developments in the Wang Lijun case has prominently been reported today only by southern newspapers, mostly from Guangdong; the Beijing and Shanghai papers seem to have sidestepped the story.<\/p>\n

As the\u00a0Daily Sunshine<\/em>\u00a0continues, the defendant has been informed of the charges against him and has been allowed to appoint a counsel to act as his defense. The indictment drawn up against Wang includes that he\u00a0was fully aware of Bo Gu Kailai\u2019s murder of Neil Heywood yet protected Bo Xilai\u2019s wife from prosecution.<\/p>\n

In what might be a clear indication of how the trial is going to end, the\u00a0Daily Sunshine<\/em>\u00a0article ends with a sober judgement:\u00a0The facts of the defendant Wang Lijun\u2019s aforementioned crimes are clear, and the evidence is obvious and sufficient. His criminal responsibility [for the four crimes] will be investigated according to the law.<\/em><\/p>\n
