Cai Indepth prelaunch, confused branding

Danwei previously linked to and commented on an anonymous blog post that suggested Richard Li (PCCW chief and son of Li Ka-shing, Asia’s richest man) and Rupert Murdoch are launching a Bloomberg type news service covering China.

We have not subsequently been able to get any evidence at all of a Murdoch / Dow Jones connection to Richard Li’s operation, which has had a basic promotional website called Cai Indepth for some months already.

But Cai Indepth now has a “pre-launch” website, a feed of breaking stories.

The branding is a little confusing: in the browser bar, it’s called ‘cai business indepth limited’, while the masthead of the page reads ‘CBID – china indepth’.

It will be interesting to see if this company goes anywhere, or if it becomes just another case of a rich man throwing money down the drain because he wants to be a media mogul.

Cai Indepth already has a strong competitor that appears to offer the same type of information, with a name that is much easier to remember: Capital Vue.
