Xinhua Daily Telegraph, April 12, 2010

In the week following the rescue of 115 miners from a flooded coal mine in Wangjialing, Shanxi Province, there has been no further good news concerning the 38 miners who remained trapped underground. Thirty-three of those have been found dead in the last week, and hope is running out for the last five miners.

With no additional news to report, today’s Xinhua Daily Telegraph ran an unusual front page feature that narrated the entire incident in six acts. The article could easily be a treatment for an inspiring movie-of-the-week:

Catastrophe: A leak, and in an instant 153 lives are pushed to the brink of death.

Build-up: They come from all over headed in a single direction: Wangjialing! Different groups all possessing a single purpose: to save the lives of their 153 brothers in the mine!

Rescue: Racing against time in a fight against Death himself! Emergency rescuers struggle to make headway but never give up! The trapped miners strive to save themselves and refuse to surrender!

Hope: Through the “holes of life” come the echoes of voices crying out to live.

Miracle: Cooperation and persistence snatches 115 lives from the jaws of death.

Standing Fast: We believe that they are still alive.
