Yesterday saw another nightmarish stabbing spree targeting defenseless children: in Xinzheng, Shaanxi Province, a 48-year-old villager named Wu Huanming entered a local kindergarten, stabbed seven kids, a female teacher and her mother to death before he returned home and committed suicide. This story is the bottom left headline of today’s Beijing Times; the top headline warns that this summer Beijing may see very heavy rains.

The photo shows a scene from a police raid on a nightclub. Four upscale nightclubs in Beijing, including Passion (天上人间) at the Great Wall Sheraton Hotel, were ordered to suspend operations for six months after a late night police raid caught hundreds of escorts by surprise at around 11 o’clock pm on Tuesday. According to the newspaper, the latest crackdown on escort service and prostitution related offenses has reduced the number of police reports on such matters by 30 percent.
