Shoe-throwing at Wen, reminiscent of Bush

Whilst delivering a speech about global economics at Cambridge University, UK, a man threw a shoe at Premier Wen Jiabao.

Wen is visiting Britain on the final leg of his European “confidence” tour.

After the incident, students shouted “Shame on you!” and Wen paused, saying slowly, “This despicable behaviour cannot stand in the way of friendship between China and the UK,” which was followed by applause from the audience.

Both Phoenix TV (凤凰卫士) and CCTV’s live broadcasts were nervously stopped. Phoenix TV cut to the presenters and then ads.

This incident comes after reports marred by pro-Tibet protests during Wen’s visit, but including a positive Financial Times interview with the Premier, which emphasized economic development.

Update: 1. You may need a proxy to get to the video. 2. Whiteboard Paper (白板报) has linked to a Sky News video focusing on Wen, rather than the crowd, during the interruption.
